If you want to taste authentic Georgian organic wines straight from family cellars—and get a feel for local life in Kakheti—this day trip is for you. You’ll meet passionate winemakers, enjoy homemade food under grapevines, and learn firsthand why Georgian wine is so special.
The morning air in Tbilisi was still cool when our guide pulled up outside the hotel—right on time, which I appreciated. We set off east towards Kakheti, Georgia’s heart of winemaking. The drive over the Gombori mountain range was a surprise: mist hugging the hills, sheep wandering along the roadside, and that earthy scent after last night’s rain. It took about two hours, but honestly, it didn’t feel long with all the stories our guide shared about Georgian wine traditions (and a few jokes).
Our first stop was Gvardzelashvili Wine Cellar. The owner greeted us himself—George, warm handshake and all. His cellar isn’t fancy; it’s more like stepping into someone’s home. He poured us his amber qvevri wine and explained how he buries the clay vessels underground for months. I noticed his hands were stained from grapes—tiny detail, but you could tell he lives this life. We tasted three wines here; each had its own personality. There was homemade bread on the table too, still warm.
Next up: Vellino Winery, tucked away behind a row of walnut trees. Here it felt quieter—just birds and distant laughter from workers in the vineyard. Their saperavi had this wild berry taste I hadn’t tried before. The host told us about their organic methods—no chemicals at all—and even let us peek inside their small production room.
Lunch came at Okros Wines, right as my stomach started rumbling. We sat outside under a grapevine canopy while plates of khachapuri and fresh salads appeared one after another. Their white wine paired perfectly with everything—crisp but not sharp. Someone nearby played soft folk music on a panduri (I think that’s what it was called). By then, we’d all loosened up and swapped stories with our guide about favorite wines back home.
The ride back to Tbilisi was mellow; sun dipping low over the fields, everyone just quietly content—or maybe just sleepy from all that wine and food. If you’re curious about real Georgian organic wine (not just what you see in shops), this is the way to do it: small cellars, real people, no rush.
You’ll try several different wines at each stop—usually 2-3 types per winery. Each tasting is guided by the winemaker or staff who’ll explain what makes their wines unique.
Yes! Lunch is included at one of the wineries and features traditional Georgian dishes like khachapuri (cheese bread), fresh salads, and seasonal specialties. Vegetarian options are available if you let us know ahead of time.
The whole experience takes about 9-10 hours including travel time from Tbilisi to Kakheti and back.
Kids are welcome as long as they’re with an adult (wine tastings are only for those 18+). Non-drinkers can still enjoy the scenery, food, and atmosphere—just let your guide know your preference.
Your day includes hotel pickup/drop-off in Tbilisi, private transport with a friendly local guide, bottled water for the road, all taxes/fees covered, guided tastings at three organic wineries (with plenty of stories), plus a hearty lunch featuring local dishes. Just let us know if you have any dietary needs—we’ll take care of it!
