The experience

Melouri Cave sits in the karst region near Kutaisi, about 15 minutes' drive from the meeting point. After you're fitted with your caving suit, helmet, headlamp, gloves and boots, the drive takes you to the cave area, followed by a 15-minute forest hike to the entrance. This is not a show cave with paved walkways and electric lights. You're moving through real underground passages, some of them canyons, with only your headlamp cutting through the dark.

The cave stretches over 7 km, but your guide adjusts which sections you explore based on how comfortable you are underground. Beginners can stick to easier passages. Those with caving experience can tackle more demanding sections. You'll move through rock formations and hidden chambers that see few visitors. The small group size means the guide can watch your pace and make changes on the fly.

The full outing runs about six hours from start to finish. Bring your own long-sleeve clothing to wear under the caving suit for extra warmth and protection. Children from age 13 are welcome if they're comfortable with moderate physical exertion and confined spaces.

How much of Melouri Cave do I actually explore on this trip?

The cave stretches over 7 km total, and your guide chooses which sections you visit based on your skill level and comfort. Beginners explore easier passages. More experienced cavers can tackle challenging sections deeper in.

What's the difference between this and a typical show cave tour?

Melouri has no artificial lighting, no paved paths and no crowds. You're moving through a real, wild cave with your headlamp and your guide, not walking a lit corridor past formations behind barriers.

Do I need caving experience to do this?

No. The route adjusts to all skill levels, from leisurely exploration to more demanding passages. Your guide reads your comfort and adapts the day accordingly.

What happens if I'm not comfortable in tight spaces or darkness?

Talk to the operator before booking. The cave involves confined passages and reliance on your headlamp. Your guide can keep you in easier sections, but you should be honest about your comfort level underground.

How do I get to the cave if I don't have a car?

Transportation from the meeting point near the office to the cave area is included. You'll drive about 15 minutes, then hike 15 minutes through forest to the entrance.
