The Experience

You know that weird feeling when you wake up somewhere new and it’s quiet but not silent? That’s how it started in Kutaisi—just a few of us shuffling around outside the office, still half-asleep. Our guide Nino handed out coffees (lifesaver) before we set off for Okatse Canyon. The drive was bumpy in places; I kept staring out at the green hills, thinking about how far from home I felt. At Okatse, there’s this long hanging bridge—honestly, my legs went a bit jellyish looking down into the canyon. Nino laughed and said even locals sometimes get nervous. The air was sharp and cool, kind of piney. We took the 6 km trek instead of the off-road taxi; my shoes got muddy but I didn’t care.

Martvili Canyon was next—totally different vibe. There were families everywhere, kids skipping stones while we waited for our boat tour. The water was this unreal turquoise color (I tried to take a photo but it never looks right). Our boat guy didn’t speak much English but he grinned every time we passed a waterfall—he’d point and say something in Georgian I couldn’t catch. There’s a zip line too if you’re braver than me. Afterward, lunch at this little restaurant nearby—homemade khachapuri that came out steaming hot. I probably ate too much but no regrets.

Prometheus Cave is honestly like stepping onto another planet—cooler air hits your face as soon as you go underground, and everything echoes weirdly. The lights make all these rock shapes glow gold and blue; there’s even a Hall of Love (Nino said people actually get married down here). We did the underground boat ride at the end—I kept ducking under low rocks, laughing because I’m taller than most Georgians apparently. Coming back up into daylight felt strange after all that time below ground.

I still think about that first view over Okatse sometimes—the wind in my face and nothing but green cliffs ahead. If you’re near Kutaisi and want one day where it feels like three different worlds, this is it.
