The experience

The tour departs Batumi at 9 a.m. and heads into Samegrelo and Imereti, the regions where the Colchis lowlands open up. The Martvili Canyon section starts at the visitor center with a 700-meter stone paved circular route that crosses the Dadiani historical trail. You cross two bridges and stand on three platform views, then descend a 30-step staircase built from large limestone boulders before boarding a 300-meter boat tour on the river Abasha. The canyon walls rise around you as the boat moves through the water.

From there the tour moves to Kumistavi and Prometheus Cave, where the walking trail stretches 1,700 meters through the grottoes. Stalactites and stalagmites hang from the ceiling and rise from the floor. Underground waterfalls and rivers flow through passages, and a subterranean lake sits deeper in the cave system. The cave is also called Amirani, named for the mythological figure chained to a rock in the legend. The final stop is Bagrati temple in Kutaisi, a Georgian structure from a thousand years ago that stands as a marker of the region's architectural heritage.

The tour runs eight hours total and includes private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, a live guide who speaks English or Russian, WiFi on board, and hotel pickup from Batumi. Tickets to Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave are separate purchases at the sites.
