The experience

The observation platform is the first stop, and on clear days you can see Mount Elbrus rising in the distance. From there the route drops into the mountains themselves: Mirveti waterfall sits in a pocket of boxwood so rare and moss-covered that the whole ravine feels sealed off from the coast below. The Adjara wine house comes next, where you learn how wine has been made here for centuries using methods older than anywhere else in the world, and you taste what the region produces now.

Makhuntseti waterfall is the second major cascade, and then the route brings you to Queen Tamara's arch bridge, a 12th-century structure built during the reign of Georgia's legendary king. The bridge is a short walk from the road, and the stories attached to it (legends, mysticism, love) are part of what the guide carries through the day. The air-conditioned vehicle waits between stops, so the heat and the climb don't pile up.

If you add the Georgian family lunch, the tour ends at a house in the mountains where you eat homemade food, taste wine and chacha, and watch traditional dances and songs. The family hosts the meal, and a tamada, the traditional Georgian toastmaster, leads the table. That option costs around 16 euros per person and turns the last hours into something closer to a full day immersion than a quick descent back to the coast.

Is this one for you?The tour is shared with other travelers and led by a guide, so the route and pace are set. This works best if you want the mountains and the history explained rather than time to wander on your own. Add the Georgian family lunch if you want the day to end with food, wine and folk performance. Without it, you're back in Batumi by late afternoon.
