Step-by-step itinerary
Traditional Gambian home cook meal
- Meet Gambian family
- Go to market to shop
- Participate in cooking meal
- Enjoy authentic home cooked food
The experience
The day starts where Gambian families start theirs: at the market. You'll shop alongside your host and her family for the ingredients you'll cook with, seeing what's fresh and in season rather than working from a preset menu. This is how daily meals come together here, and you're doing it the same way: picking produce, talking through what works, making real decisions about what goes into the pot.
Back in the family kitchen, you'll participate in preparing the meal, learning techniques and flavors as you cook. The food you make is what the family actually eats. There's no performance version or simplified tourist adaptation. You'll eat together when it's ready, and bottled water is provided throughout. The whole experience takes between 4 and 8 hours. The length depends on what the market has that day and how the cooking unfolds, not a fixed schedule.
Wheelchair-accessible transportation is available, and the experience welcomes children from age 6 onward. Infants and small children can come in a pram or stroller. Service animals are allowed. The host and her family speak English, so there's no language barrier to learning or conversation.

Is this one for you? This works best for small groups or solo travelers who want to spend a full morning or afternoon inside a real Gambian household, cooking and eating with the family rather than watching a demonstration. If you're looking for a quick cooking demo or a structured class with set recipes, a longer, unscheduled day in someone's kitchen isn't the fit.
