The experience
Serekunda Market opens the day. You walk through the stalls to see local products, vegetables, fish, dairy and spices. The guide explains what each is used for and how it fits into Gambian cooking. From there, the jeep takes you to Kachikally Crocodile Pool, a traditional shrine where you'll learn the history of the spiritual crocodiles and the fertility beliefs tied to the water. You get to stroke the crocodiles and shake hands with them before moving on.
The cattle market in Abuko comes next, followed by a 20-minute break at Lamin Lodge for coffee, tea and homemade doughnuts. After that, you visit the main oyster collection point to learn how oysters fit into the community. Then comes the safari portion: a drive through nearly 20 small villages and hamlets in the west and south of Gambia. A stop in one village lets you see how locals live as a family. You also visit a local school where the guide explains the three types of education in Gambia, with stops at different points for detail. Lunch happens at a beach on the coast, where you have 2.5 hours to relax on free sun beds or swim.
The final stop is Tanji fish market, about 22 kilometres away. It's the biggest and busiest fish market in Gambia. You'll see the day's catch arrive and watch how fish are processed and preserved for export across Africa. The guide points out the role Gambian women play in the fishing industry. The drive back to your hotel ends the day, and you've covered real Gambia, not tourist Gambia.
