You leave Raiatea by boat and head across the lagoon toward Tahaa, and the water changes color about halfway through — it goes from pale turquoise to something deeper, almost unreal. The coral garden itself sits in a preserved section of the lagoon, and it's genuinely different from what you'd see in an aquarium or a photo.
