The Experience

I nearly lost my hat to the wind on the way up Magic Mountain—didn’t expect that at all. Franck (our guide, born here) just grinned and told me to hold on, “It’s always like this up here.” The view was something else: Opunohu Bay below, sunlight catching the water in this weird silver-blue way. I could hear chickens somewhere behind us and someone’s radio drifting from a house down the hill. It felt like we were in someone’s backyard more than a lookout.

We stopped at Belvedere Lookout next—Franck pointed out Rotui mountain and tried to explain how it splits Cook’s Bay from Opunohu. I’m not sure I got all of it but he drew a little map in the dirt with a stick, which made me laugh. There was a sweet smell everywhere, kind of like vanilla but earthier, probably those flowers he kept naming (I forgot most of them). At one point we walked through pineapple fields—the ground was soft from last night’s rain and my shoes got muddy but nobody cared.

The best part? Tasting homemade jams at this tiny roadside stand. Franck handed us spoons and let us try everything—guava, passionfruit, something called “tiare” that I still can’t pronounce right. He laughed when I tried anyway. We finished with fresh juice and a shot of local liqueur (stronger than it looks). The whole thing took about three and a half hours but honestly, time just slipped by.
