Snowshoes, starlight, and a hot meal in the Alps

An evening activity in Chamonix combining a guided snowshoe walk at dusk with a four-hour mountain experience that ends in a restaurant. You trek through the heights with a guide who points out peaks and snow tracks, then settle into a warm dining room for local Savoyard dishes and wine before walking back under the stars.

The experience

The evening starts at dusk. You put on snowshoes, clip on a headlamp, and set off alongside your guide into the heights above Chamonix. The walk is short and accessible: the kind where you notice the snow crunching under each step and hear almost nothing else. Your guide names the surrounding peaks, shares local stories, and helps you read the animal tracks pressed into the snow. It's the mountain at a different hour, when the usual crowds are gone.

After an hour or so of walking, you reach a mountain restaurant. The contrast hits: warmth, lamplight, the smell of cooking. You sit down to local Savoyard food (cheese-heavy dishes that are emblematic of the region) paired with a Savoyard wine. Your guide continues the evening here, talking through the gastronomy and customs of the Alps over the meal. After dinner comes a glass of Génépi (a local herbal liqueur), and then the walk back down through the night, this time under stars.

Snowshoe rental is included, as is the guide for the full four hours. Drinks beyond the wine at dinner are not included, nor are any personal expenses. The activity runs only in winter, and you'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking and the altitude.

What’s included

Is this one for you? This is a private, guided experience, so you're not joining a group. It's you and your guide for the evening. Choose it if you want to move through the mountains at your own pace with someone who knows the region, and if you'd rather learn about Chamonix over a warm meal than on a daytime tour.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and French.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the walk actually like on snowshoes at night in Chamonix?

The walk follows a short, accessible route through the heights above Chamonix at dusk. You move at a pace where you can hear the snow under your feet and your guide can point out peaks and animal tracks in the snow. It's not a strenuous hike, but it does require moderate fitness and comfort with walking in darkness with a headlamp.

What kind of food do you eat at the mountain restaurant?

The dinner features local Savoyard recipes, with cheese as the main ingredient in most dishes. This is the Alps, and cheese is central to the regional cuisine. Wine from the Savoie region accompanies the meal, and after dinner you'll have a glass of Génépi, a local herbal liqueur.

How long does the whole evening take?

The full experience runs four hours from start to finish: the snowshoe walk up, the dinner, and the walk back down under the stars.

Do I need my own snowshoes, or are they provided?

Snowshoes are included in the activity, so you don't need to bring your own or rent them separately.
