A paragliding tandem flight in Chamonix takes off from Plan-Praz (or Plan de l'Aiguille if weather closes the primary site) and lasts 15 to 25 minutes, depending on wind. You fly alongside a French-certified instructor who holds full insurance; the pilot may hand you the controls to try. The activity includes a helmet and professional guidance; you meet at the cable car ticket office 10 minutes early, and the total time on the ground is about an hour.

The Experience

Fifteen to 25 minutes in the air means you're floating directly in front of Mont-Blanc, Europe's highest peak, for the entire flight. The takeoff point at Plan-Praz sits high enough that the Alps fill your view in every direction—summits, ridges, the whole range laid out below. Wind conditions decide the exact length of the flight, but the operator has flown this route enough to know what each day will hold. If Plan-Praz closes due to weather or cable car maintenance (it does from mid-September through October), you fly from Plan de l'Aiguille instead, which is a different but equally strong flight; the meeting point shifts to the base of the Aiguille du Midi cable car in that case.

Your pilot is a certified French paragliding instructor with full insurance covering both of you. All pilots speak English and French; some speak Spanish and Italian as well. Once you're airborne, the pilot handles the wing—you're strapped in and secure—but they often let you try steering yourself if you want to. There's no experience needed; this is how people get introduced to paragliding. Bring only a very small bag, if anything; large packs don't work in the harness. Weight matters for timing: lighter fliers (under 40 kg) fly best in early morning slots like 8 or 9 am; those between 40 and 60 kg should book by 11 am; heavier fliers have more flexibility, though anyone over 90 kg shouldn't fly before 10 am. The absolute maximum weight is 100 kg.

You'll meet the pilots at the cable car ticket office—there's no separate desk, just wait in front. Arrive 10 minutes early. You'll need to buy a one-way cable car ticket (about 18 euros) to reach the takeoff point. If the pilots are running up to 10 minutes late, they'll find you; keep your phone on in case they call. If weather makes a safe flight impossible, you get a full refund. The whole activity, including the cable car ride up and the flight itself, takes roughly an hour from start to finish.
