The Experience
I didn’t expect to laugh so much before breakfast in Paris. The sidecar pulled up right outside our hotel—honestly, I felt a bit ridiculous putting on the helmet and gloves (the driver grinned like he’d seen this reaction before). But as soon as we zipped into the street, weaving past sleepy cafés and that first whiff of bakery air hit me, I forgot about looking cool. Paris looked different from down here—closer somehow. Our guide, Antoine, pointed out the way sunlight hit the gold dome of Invalides and told us a story about Napoleon that I probably should’ve learned in school.
The engine’s rumble made conversation a little tricky at times, but that just meant more time to watch people on the Champs-Élysées—locals rushing by with scarves flying, tourists pausing for selfies. We stopped for photos at the Eiffel Tower (I almost dropped my phone fumbling with my gloves), then zipped past the Louvre’s glass pyramid. Somewhere near the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, Antoine tried to teach me how to say “arrondissement” properly. I butchered it; he laughed and said even Parisians mess it up sometimes.
We rolled past Notre-Dame and slowed near the entrance to the catacombs—there was this odd hush there, even with city noise around us. For a second I could smell something earthy and old drifting up from below. The whole ride felt like skipping through someone else’s memories of Paris—familiar places but in a new order, with wind in your face instead of crowds at your back. I still think about that view from behind Antoine’s shoulder as we curved along the Seine. It’s not what I pictured when I booked a day trip in Paris but… maybe that’s why it stuck with me.
