The Experience

"You really want to try biking in Paris?" That’s what my friend asked when we met our guide near the 4th arrondissement, helmets hanging off our handlebars. I wasn’t sure either—Paris traffic always looked wild from the sidewalk—but somehow it felt different once we started pedaling. Camille told us stories about old court cases and artists who used to haunt these bridges. I tried to imagine all those lives stacked on top of each other—kind of dizzying. The ride through the 1st arrondissement was bumpier than I expected (those cobblestones!), but honestly it made me laugh more than anything. At one point my basket rattled so much I thought my water bottle would jump out.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed weaving through traffic on Rue Cler, but there’s something about being part of that steady stream—locals chatting outside cafés, delivery bikes zipping past—that makes you forget you’re a tourist for a second. We stopped for a quick snack (I grabbed a pain au chocolat), then rode right up next to the Eiffel Tower. It’s strange how seeing it from a bike lane instead of a postcard makes it feel almost… normal? Not less impressive though—I still think about that view every time I see photos now.

On our way back along the river we ducked between the Grand and Petit Palais—Camille threw in some facts about World’s Fairs that I promptly forgot (sorry Camille). Last stop: Champs Elysées for an obligatory Arc de Triomphe photo. Biking down that boulevard felt like cheating—so much faster than walking but you still catch all those little moments: a couple arguing softly in French, sunlight flickering through plane trees overhead. By then my legs were tired but in that good way where you know you’ve actually seen something real.
