The Experience

The tour starts at City Hall and heads toward the Cité and St Louis islands, passing Notre-Dame cathedral with its 854-year-old chimeras and gargoyles. From there you ride along the Seine's UNESCO-listed riverbanks, through medieval squares and past the love lock bridge, then continue to the Louvre—the world's largest museum at 2,106 feet long, begun in 1190 during the Crusades. The guide shares the history as you go, so the landmarks make sense instead of just appearing.

The route takes you through the Latin Quarter and into St Germain des Prés, the literary heart of Paris where Hemingway and Fitzgerald once gathered in the famous cafés. You'll see the Grand Palais, the Belle Époque iron and steel palaces built when France and Britain were competing for cultural influence, and pass the Musée de l'Armée with Napoleon's tomb. The tour also covers Place de la Concorde, where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed, and the Champs-Élysées, sometimes called the most beautiful avenue in the world.

Lightweight, comfortable bikes and helmets (mandatory for riders under 12) are included, and the guide offers local tips about restaurants, cafés, shopping and nightlife along the way. The tour runs in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and four other languages, so you hear it in your own words. You'll need to be at least 150 cm tall and arrive 10 minutes early; the ride is not recommended for people with spinal injuries, though it suits all other fitness levels.
