The Experience

How do you cover Nice's scattered highlights — the waterfront, the medieval center, the hilltop views, the working harbor — without a car or a long walk between stops? A Segway handles the distance and the hills, so you spend the time looking instead of moving. The tour starts with a short training session to make sure you're comfortable on the machine, then rolls out along the Promenade des Anglais, the famous palm-lined boulevard where you ride the bike path with the Bay of Angels on one side and the city rising on the other.

From there you head into Old Nice — Vieux-Nice — a tangle of narrow alleys lined with colorful buildings, baroque churches and hidden squares. The guide takes you through the neighborhood's history and architecture while pointing out the Cours Saleya, the market that still fills these streets. Halfway through, you stop to eat: a pissaladière (a savory pie with onions, anchovies and olives) and a chard pie, both traditional Nice specialties. The guide explains what you're eating and why these dishes matter to the city's food culture.

The Segway then climbs to Castle Hill, a peaceful park overlooking the city. From the top you see the Mediterranean, the red tiled roofs of Old Nice spreading below, and the port laid out in front.
