The Experience

We started winding up the old Montmartre hill just as the morning felt like it might rain, but it never really did — just that Parisian gray that makes the colors pop. Our guide, Camille, waved us over by a bakery window fogged up from inside. She handed out our first pastry (I think it was a chouquette?) and told us about a painter who lost everything right on this street. The sugar stuck to my fingers while she spoke; I kept thinking how odd it is to eat something so light while hearing about so much loss.

There were six pastry stops in total — I actually lost count after the third because we got caught up laughing at Camille’s impression of Toulouse-Lautrec dancing at the Moulin Rouge. She showed us where the can-can was invented (and tried to get us to kick along, which... let’s just say I’m not built for that). Somewhere between bites of tarte aux pommes and peering into an old artist’s studio, she pointed out one of the last windmills still standing in Montmartre. I’d never noticed it before, even though I’ve walked these streets more than once.

The tour ended right in front of Sacré-Cœur Basilica. It was busier than I expected — a mix of tourists and locals carrying baguettes under their arms, kids running around the steps. Camille told us how the basilica’s stones clean themselves every time it rains (which sounded like magic but apparently is just chemistry). I still think about that view from up there, especially with crumbs in my pocket and all those strange stories echoing around my head. You leave feeling full in more ways than one.
