The Experience

I met our guide just outside the Blanche metro — he was easy to spot, waving a little notebook and already chatting with two other travelers. We set off straight into Montmartre’s winding streets. I could smell coffee from a bakery (someone in line was arguing about croissant prices — classic Paris), and our group kind of fell into step together. The guide, Tom, started pointing out tiny details I’d never have noticed: old artists’ signatures scratched into the stone by Place du Tertre, faded but still there if you squint. He asked if anyone had tried pronouncing “Rue Lepic” properly; I gave it a shot and got a laugh from him and an older lady passing by — apparently my accent is hopeless.

We climbed up toward Sacré-Cœur Basilica — it’s steeper than it looks in photos, honestly. Inside, it was quieter than I expected. There’s this faint scent of wax and stone dust that I can still remember now. Tom told us about Picasso living nearby (I didn’t know he once traded paintings for meals here), and we lingered at the top for a while just staring out over Paris. The view isn’t overrated. Someone in our group tried to count all the rooftops; they gave up after twenty seconds.

Afterwards we wound down past the Moulin Rouge — red lights even in daylight, tourists everywhere but somehow still feels like old Paris if you look past the selfie sticks. Tom threw in some stories about cabaret scandals (some probably not safe for kids). At one point we stopped for pastries near Café des Deux Moulins; I went for a pain au chocolat that left flakes all over my jacket. Didn’t care though — felt right at home with everyone else brushing crumbs away.

By the time we hit the Champs-Élysées and caught sight of the Arc de Triomphe in the distance, my feet were tired but my head was full of weird facts (like how British tourists always mess up ordering coffee here). It wasn’t just sightseeing — more like walking through layers of stories with someone who actually lives them every day. I’m still thinking about that view from Sacré-Cœur.
