The experience

You leave Aix-en-Provence in the morning and drive an hour into the Luberon, arriving at Gordes, a village of stone houses stacked on a hilltop and officially ranked among the most beautiful in France. A guided walk takes you through the narrow streets and past the Renaissance château. Depending on the season, you'll see Sénanque Abbey nearby, surrounded by lavender fields in June and July. After the walk, you have free time to explore on your own, grab lunch at one of the cafés (at your own expense), or simply sit in a shaded square.

In the afternoon, the tour moves to Lourmarin, another classified village at the foot of the Luberon mountains, known for its Renaissance château, art galleries, and the kind of Provençal atmosphere that has drawn artists and writers for decades. You get free time to wander the streets, browse the boutiques, or visit the château if you choose (entrance not included). The village sits in the middle of vineyards and olive groves, and there is no fixed itinerary here. You decide how much time to spend in the squares or walking the narrow lanes.

The day ends with a gourmet stop that depends on when you travel. Monday through Saturday, you visit a working olive oil mill in the region, where a guide walks you through how olives move from the grove to the press, then leads a tasting of different oils so you can taste how they vary. On Sundays, this becomes a visit to the Musée du Calisson at Confiserie du Roy René, an exhibition about the almond-based sweets Aix is famous for, with time to browse the shop. You return to Aix-en-Provence in the late afternoon.
