The experience

The tour starts in the morning at the Port of Villefranche and moves through Nice first, where you walk the Cours Saleya flower market in the old town and see the Belle Époque mansions lining the Promenade des Anglais. From there, the route climbs to Èze, a medieval village built into the cliffs where galleries and workshops now fill the ancient stone buildings. The exotic garden there offers views back down to the coast, and the Fragonard perfume factory sits among the narrow streets.

On the way down, you stop at La Turbie to see the Trophée des Alpes, a Roman monument ordered by the Senate to honor Augustus's victory. The terraces there look out over both the French and Italian Riviera, and Monaco sits 1,500 feet below, close enough to seem within reach. The final stop is Monaco itself: the Grimaldi palace, the cathedral, and the streets of the old town, followed by Monte-Carlo, where the Casino and Opera House sit on a terrace overlooking the Formula 1 track. Your guide brings you back to Villefranche at the end of the day.

The tour runs 6 to 8 hours with a professional guide who speaks English, French or Russian. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan, and bottled water is provided throughout. Pickup and drop-off happen at the port, so if you're arriving by ship, the logistics are already arranged.
