Dive into sea caves and snorkel turquoise coves carved by 300 million years of rock

Snorkeling in the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage site off Corsica's west coast, departs from the small port of Cargèse or Sagone on a 12-person semi-rigid boat. You explore red and ocher cliffs, sea caves sculpted by erosion, a natural arch, and Capo Rosso — a 331-meter rock promontory unreachable by road — then snorkel in a wild cove with masks provided. The boat's small size lets it navigate into caves and tight spaces larger vessels cannot reach. The cruise runs 2.5 hours and includes snorkeling equipment and a K-Way in season; children from age 4 are welcome, and guides speak English and French.

Step-by-step itinerary

Cruise and snorkeling at Calanques de Piana

  • Admire Genoese tower of Omigna
  • Navigate along Corsica's coastline
  • View Arone beach in Piana
  • Explore Calanques de Piana cliffs and caves
  • Visit Capo Rosso rock promontory
  • Swim and snorkel in wild cove

The Experience

You board from Cargèse or Sagone, two small ports just 40 minutes from Ajaccio with free parking and no traffic jams to cross. The Liamone, a semi-rigid boat built for 12 people, leaves the dock and heads north along the coast. In the first 20 minutes you pass the Genoese tower of Omigna, a 16th-century stone fortress built to defend against Barbary pirates and now a classified monument rising from the water. The captain narrates as you cruise, and the coastline itself becomes the first attraction — Arone beach appears on your right, one of Corsica's most photographed stretches of sand.

After another 20 minutes of navigation, the Calanques de Piana come into view: a set of red and ocher rock formations that rise straight out of turquoise water, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped by millennia of erosion. The boat's small size and maneuverability let it slip into sea caves and under natural arches that larger vessels cannot enter. You see the rock formations from the water in ways land-based viewpoints cannot show — the cliffs tower above you, the caves open as you approach, and the colors shift as light hits the stone. Then the boat moves to Capo Rosso, a 331-meter igneous rock promontory that has no road access; from the sea it rises in sheer grandeur above turquoise water.

At a wild cove near Capo Rosso, you put on the snorkeling masks provided and slip into the water. The seabed here is alive with fish and rock formations to explore. You snorkel at your own pace while the boat stays nearby, the captain watching and ready. After the water, you relax on deck as the boat heads back to port, the coastline receding behind you. The whole experience runs 2.5 hours from departure to return.

What’s included

  • Snorkeling masks and equipment.
  • K-Way (in season).
  • captain's narration of the coastline and monuments.
  • access to sea caves and the natural arch via the boat's small size.

Is this one for you?Book this if you have a free afternoon in Corsica and want to see the Calanques de Piana from the water rather than from the clifftop viewpoints on land — the boat gets you inside the caves and under the arches, which land-based views cannot show. The small group size and fixed 2.5-hour duration mean you can fit it between other plans without a full day commitment.

Top questions

What is the Calanques de Piana and why is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The Calanques de Piana is a set of spectacular red and ocher rock formations on Corsica's west coast, shaped by erosion over millions of years into cliffs, caves and natural arches. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its geological significance and the striking landscape these formations create above the turquoise water.

Can the boat actually enter the sea caves, or do you just see them from a distance?

The Liamone's small size and maneuverability let it navigate into the sea caves and under natural arches — you experience them from inside the boat rather than viewing them from offshore. Larger vessels cannot access these spaces.

Is this suitable for children, and what's the minimum age?

Children are welcome from age 4. The boat seats only 12 people total, so the group stays small and the captain can ensure comfort and safety for all ages.

What language does the guide speak?

The captain and guide speak English and French during the cruise.
