The experience
The minivan picks you up at your Paris accommodation between 7:00 and 7:30 am, and a light French breakfast of pastries, fruit juice, coffee and tea is served on board during the two-hour drive to Champagne. The route heads to the village of Verzenay, where the guide walks you through the vineyards and explains the work across all four seasons, from pruning to harvest. You then visit a small champagne producer where a vintner shows how grapes become champagne, followed by a tasting of at least three champagnes. The minivan then drives 30 minutes to Reims for lunch.
Lunch happens at Au Petit Comptoir, a restaurant where the chef prepares only eight dishes daily using fresh, seasonal ingredients. You choose a three-course menu from three starters, three mains and two desserts, and the chef accommodates dietary needs and allergies. The meal includes a glass of red or white wine, mineral water, coffee or tea. After lunch, you have a guided tour of Reims Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site where all French kings were crowned. The cathedral was heavily damaged in World War I and has been restored. The stained glass windows made by Marc Chagall are a long stop on the itinerary.
The afternoon's main event is the Pommery estate, founded in 1836. The English architecture of the main building strikes visitors first, but the real surprise comes in the chalk pits dating back to Roman times, where 27 million bottles of champagne age underground. You finish with a glass of champagne in the middle of modern art installations. The return drive to Paris takes around two and a half hours, accounting for rush-hour traffic.
