The Experience

You start with a 45-minute drive from Avignon to Nîmes, where your guide stops at the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple built for the grandsons of Emperor Augustus. A 15-minute walk brings you to the Nîmes Arena, an amphitheatre modeled on the Colosseum and built around 100 AD. You get an audio-guided tour inside (April to October; November to March the visit becomes a walk around the city to see the main monuments). After 30 minutes back in the car, you arrive at the Pont du Gard.

The Pont du Gard is the centerpiece—a three-tiered Roman aqueduct built around 50 AD as part of a 52-kilometer system that carried water to Nîmes. You spend an hour here with a picnic of local farm products: boiled eggs, tapenade, pepper cream, fresh goat cheese, seasonal fruit and juice (April to October only). The walk around the monument itself gives you views from multiple angles of the engineering that has survived nearly two thousand years.

From there, a 30-minute drive takes you to Orange. You stop at the Arc de Triomphe d'Orange for photos and audio recordings about its history, then move to the Ancient Theatre, built around 20 BC. The audio-guided tour covers the theatre's structure and role in Roman life. The drive back to Avignon takes about 30 minutes. Each site includes entry; you carry a 75-centilitre water bottle throughout the day.
