Four Provence landmarks in one day: the Popes Palace, a hilltop village, and a Roman bridge

A full-day guided tour from Avignon covering four major sites across Provence—the Popes Palace and medieval center in Avignon, the village of Saint-Rémy de Provence, the perched settlement of Les Baux de Provence, and the UNESCO World Heritage Pont du Gard aqueduct. The guide leads the morning walking tour and afternoon stops; transport by air-conditioned minivan, entry to the Popes Palace and Pont du Gard, and a glass of Côtes du Rhône wine are included. The tour runs ten hours with a lunch break you arrange yourself in Avignon.

The Experience

The day starts at 9 am in central Avignon with a walking tour through the medieval city center, where your guide leads you through the streets around the Popes Palace—the vast Gothic residence that anchored papal power in the 14th century. After the walk, you get a glass of Côtes du Rhône wine before heading to the palace itself for the entrance visit. Lunch and a snack break follow on your own in Avignon, giving you time to eat where you choose.

At 2 pm you meet the guide again at the tourism office to head into the Alpilles hills. Saint-Rémy de Provence gets a short walking stop through its center, then you move on to Les Baux de Provence—a village built into a rocky ridge with views across the valley. You have free time to walk the narrow streets and take in the landscape before the group continues to the Pont du Gard, the three-tiered Roman aqueduct that carried water across the Gardon river valley. Entry is included; the museum at the site costs extra if you want it. The minivan brings everyone back to Avignon by evening.

The walking sections involve cobblestone streets and climbing stairs, so comfortable shoes matter. Children from age 4 are welcome; the tour is led in English, though your guide may speak multiple languages. The minivan is air-conditioned for the stretches between sites.

What’s included

  • Air-conditioned minivan transport between all four sites.
  • English-speaking guide for the full day.
  • entrance ticket to the Popes Palace.
  • entrance ticket to the Pont du Gard aqueduct.
  • one glass of Côtes du Rhône wine after the morning walking tour.

Top questions

What exactly is the Popes Palace and why is it in Avignon?

The Palace of the Popes is the enormous Gothic fortress where the papal court moved in the 14th century, when the Pope ruled from Avignon instead of Rome. You visit the interior as part of the tour, and the morning walking tour shows you the palace and the medieval streets around it.

Do I need to book lunch separately, or is it included?

Lunch is not included in the tour price—you arrange and pay for your own meal during the break in Avignon after the morning walking tour and palace visit. The afternoon part of the tour starts at 2 pm, giving you time to eat in the city.

Is the Pont du Gard museum entrance included?

Entry to the Pont du Gard aqueduct itself is included, so you can walk on and around the Roman bridge. The museum at the site is separate and costs extra if you want to visit it.

How much walking is involved, and what surfaces will I be on?

You'll walk on cobblestone streets in Avignon's medieval center and climb multiple flights of steps, particularly in the Popes Palace. Saint-Rémy and Les Baux also involve walking through village streets. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and the tour suits all fitness levels, though the steps and uneven surfaces mean it is not suitable for children under 4.

What time does the tour end, and where?

The tour runs ten hours total, starting at 9 am and ending in the evening back in Avignon. You'll be returned to the city center where the tour began.

Is hotel pickup included, or do I need to get to the meeting point myself?

Hotel pickup is not included. You'll meet the guide at 4 rue de la République in central Avignon at 9 am to start the morning tour, and again at the Avignon Tourism Office at 41 cours Jean Jaurès at 2 pm for the afternoon portion.
