The Experience

“So, Hunawihr’s church bells were echoing when we stepped out of the van — I almost dropped my phone trying to take a photo of the storks’ nests on the roof. Our guide, Jean, grinned and pointed out the old fountain where people used to fill up their buckets. He had this way of telling stories that made you feel like you’d lived there, too. The air smelled faintly of woodsmoke and something sweet — maybe from a bakery around the corner? I kept meaning to ask but got distracted by the half-timbered houses leaning into each other.

Riquewihr was next, all cobblestones and window boxes overflowing with geraniums. It felt like walking through a postcard, except there was a delivery guy arguing with someone in Alsatian by the bakery — made me laugh because it reminded me that people actually live here. Lunch wasn’t included but Jean gave us tips; I ended up with tarte flambée at a tiny place he recommended (still thinking about that crispy edge). Ribeauvillé had these quiet corners where you could hear birds more than cars. I sort of lost track of time wandering behind the group for a bit.

The climb up to Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle was steeper than I expected — legs burning, but worth it for those views over the vineyards and forests. Inside, everything echoed: boots on stone floors, muffled voices bouncing off thick walls. There’s this cool draft in the armory that made me shiver (or maybe it was just nerves from imagining knights running around). Afterward we wound along the wine route again, stopping at a family-run cellar. The winemaker poured us riesling and explained why Alsace bottles are so tall — I tried repeating “Gewurztraminer” and probably butchered it; everyone laughed anyway.

By the time we rolled back into Colmar around 5:30 p.m., I had a pocket full of ticket stubs and my head buzzing with new tastes and stories. Still can’t decide if my favorite part was that first quiet moment in Hunawihr or laughing over glasses in the cellar — both kind of stick with you.
