The experience
The day starts with snowmobile instruction and a 15–30 km ride through snowy forest and across a frozen lake, taking roughly an hour and a half. Two adults share one snowmobile, so you're either driving or riding as a passenger. Children aged 4–14 travel in a sledge towed behind. Your guide leads the route and handles the pace, stopping at a secluded fishing spot where the ice is thick enough to fish safely.
Once you arrive, your guide teaches you the traditional techniques of Arctic ice fishing: the methods passed down through generations in Lapland. You'll try to catch European perch using the methods they show you. While you're at the hole, your guide builds a warm campfire on the ice. You can step back from fishing whenever you want, stand by the fire, and have hot coffee or tea with a light snack. The whole experience lasts three hours from start to finish.
Transfers run from Rovaniemi city center or Santa Claus Village to Apukka Resort and back, so you don't need your own transport. Winter clothing is provided: thermal overalls, thermal boots, woolen socks and mittens. The guide speaks English or Finnish, and you'll need to let the operator know which language you prefer when you book.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Finnish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 14 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I drive the snowmobile myself, or do I ride as a passenger?
Two adults share one snowmobile, so you take turns driving and riding. Your guide gives driving instruction before you set out and leads the route. Children aged 4–14 don't ride the snowmobile. They travel in a sledge instead.
What is ice fishing like, and do I need experience to try it?
Your guide teaches you traditional Arctic ice fishing techniques on the spot, so no experience is needed. You'll learn how to catch European perch using methods that have been used in Lapland for generations, then try it yourself at the fishing hole.
How cold will it be, and what clothing do I need to bring?
Winter clothing is included: thermal overalls, thermal boots, woolen socks and mittens. Bring warm layers underneath and a warm hat and scarf of your own. The campfire gives you a chance to warm up during the fishing part of the day.
Does the three-hour time include travel to and from Apukka Resort?
Yes, the three hours covers the full activity from pickup to return. The snowmobile ride itself takes roughly an hour and a half, and the rest is fishing time and the campfire break.
What happens if I'm not comfortable driving a snowmobile?
Riding as a passenger is a valid choice: two adults share one machine, so you can ride while your partner drives, or vice versa. Your guide controls the pace and route either way.
