The experience

Ice fishing has been part of Finnish culture for centuries: traditionally one of the few ways to get food in the depths of winter. You'll spend roughly four hours on the frozen lake doing what Finns still do: sitting on the ice, tending a line, and waiting. The guide will teach you the techniques and skills that have been passed down through generations, and if you catch fish, they'll show you how to prepare it right there on the spot.

You arrive dressed in thermal winter overalls, winter boots, a beanie and mittens: all provided in adult and children's sizes. The guide handles the setup: drilling through the ice, rigging the equipment, explaining what to watch for. You do the waiting, the watching, the actual fishing. Snacks come with you to the ice. The whole day, from pickup at your hotel to drop-off, is included within a 10 km radius of Rovaniemi city centre.

This is not a performance or a tour of a fishing village. You are on the lake doing the thing, with someone who fishes it and knows what the conditions mean. The guide speaks English. French, Spanish and Finnish are available if you ask when you book.
