The experience

You get picked up from your hotel in Rovaniemi and driven to the forest edge, where your guide leads you into the Lapland wilderness to hunt for mushrooms and berries. The walk is unhurried. You stop and forage as you go, learning which plants are edible and where to look. The guide handles the route. You focus on spotting what grows underfoot and filling your basket.

Once you've gathered enough, the group moves to a lakeside clearing for the campfire cook. Your mushrooms and berries go into the pot for chanterelle soup and grilled dishes. The guide prepares grilled salmon, bread and marshmallows over the fire. You eat sitting by the water, and if you want to swim or fish in the lake, the guide can arrange that too. A sauna sits nearby if the weather turns cool. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available on request, and dietary needs should be noted when you book.

Departure times shift with the season, so the local provider will email you the exact pickup window before the day. Bring layers: forest weather changes fast. At least two people are needed for the activity to run on weekdays and Saturdays. Sundays and public holidays require a minimum of four.
