The experience
You start by putting on snowshoes, winter overalls and boots provided by the operator, then head into the Arctic wilderness with your guide. The route goes through old forests, across frozen rivers or lakes, or up to a hilltop. Your guide picks the terrain based on what suits your group's fitness and what offers the best chance of seeing Northern Lights. The silence of the Lappish night is part of the experience. There's no ambient noise out there.
Halfway through, your guide builds a fire using flint and steel and natural materials found on site: a method that works even in temperatures as cold as minus 30 degrees Celsius. You gather around the open flames for Finnish campfire snacks and hot drinks while your guide answers questions about Lapland and Arctic life. This break gives you a chance to warm up and rest before the second half of the walk.
The whole outing runs three hours and includes transportation to and from the starting point. Northern Lights sightings depend on weather and solar activity, but the guide chooses locations and timing specifically to maximize your odds if the aurora is active that night. Children from age six can join. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health.
