The experience
Korouoma Canyon is a fracture in bedrock that runs millions of years deep, and the gorge at its center is the landmark: a drop of over 100 meters that frames the whole hike. The day trip follows the easier nationally acclaimed 5km route rather than the full 30km trail, which means the fitness demand stays easy to moderate. You walk up and down, stop for a guide-cooked BBQ lunch by an open fire, and move at a pace that leaves room to watch for wild animals and floral life in the summer and fall seasons, or to spot berries and mushrooms along the way.
The route is a loop through the protected forest, so the same terrain that brought you down brings you back up. On the return to Rovaniemi, the group stops at Auttiköngäs Falls, a separate protected area where the waterfall is the reason to pause. The whole outing, including transfer time from your pickup point in Rovaniemi, runs six hours.
