The experience

The tour starts with a minivan pickup from your hotel and a 1.5-hour drive to Korouoma Canyon, a 30-km-long fracture running along the border of Posio and Ranua municipalities. You choose your hiking distance here: 6km or 3km through terrain that is exceptionally rugged and grand. The fracture zone itself is part of bedrock that stretches hundreds of millions of years old, running from Rovaniemi through the Kemijoki River Valley all the way to Kuusamo. Several 30-meter steep streams cut through the canyon. In winter they freeze into massive ice formations that create fantastic views and play of colours.

After Korouoma, a 25-minute transfer takes you to Auttiköngäs Waterfall, where you hike a moderate 4km route. Your picnic happens during this second hike. The guide is with you throughout, and the entire day (hiking, driving, and eating) runs 7 to 8 hours. Hotel drop-off is included at the end, along with snacks and beverages during the day. The landscape works for nature photography year-round, though the frozen streams in winter are what draw most visitors back.
