A 3.5-hour guided berry-picking tour in Rovaniemi takes you into Lappish forests to learn foraging from a local guide, walk at a slow pace through quiet woods, and sit by a campfire where the guide prepares traditional Finnish pancakes. Transfers from Rovaniemi city center or Santa Claus Village are included, and depending on the season you can top your pancakes with berries you picked yourself.

The experience

The tour starts with a transfer to Apukka Resort, then follows a path deep into the woods where a guide teaches you how locals pick vitamin-rich berries and find natural ingredients in the forest. You walk at a slow pace: slow enough to notice small details, photograph the landscape, and listen to stories about the old way of living in Lapland. The guide speaks English and sets the rhythm so you're not rushing through the trees.

Midway through, you reach a campfire where the guide prepares traditional Finnish pancakes (or crepes) over the open flame while you rest. Depending on the season, you can top them with berries you picked during the walk. Coffee and tea are provided. The whole experience is built around the rhythm of the forest rather than a schedule, which is why the pace stays slow enough to absorb the landscape and the guide's knowledge of how Finns have used these woods for generations.

The tour ends with a transfer back to your starting point. Wear suitable outdoor clothing and waterproof shoes (the operator does not provide them), and bring a camera if you want to capture the details the slow pace lets you see.
