The Experience

The tour starts with a 25km drive from Lalibela airport through highland scenery, then after lunch you visit the first cluster of rock-hewn churches: Bet Medhalealem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Denagle, Bet Mikael and Golgotha. These churches have stood for at least 900 years as an active Christian shrine and the spiritual center of Ethiopian religious life. Each one is carved directly from the bedrock, and the scale becomes clear only when you walk down into them.

On the second day, you drive north to Yemrehane Kristos, a cave church built in the 11th century—nearly 100 years before Lalibela's churches. It sits inside a natural cave and contains very old paintings still visible on the interior walls. After lunch you visit the second group of churches: Bete Gabriel, Rafael, Bete Emanuel and Bete Aba Libanos, finishing with St. George, carved in the shape of a cross and often called the highlight of a Lalibela visit. On the way to and from Yemrehane Kristos you see how highland Ethiopians live in the surrounding villages. The tour includes a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony held in your guide's home—a ritual that matters because Ethiopia is the origin of coffee itself.

The final morning you attend a church service in Bet Medhane Alem, the largest of Lalibela's churches, to experience these sites as active places of worship rather than archaeological monuments.
