The experience
You land in Lalibela on a morning flight and your guide meets you at the airport to drive you to your hotel. After checking in, you head straight into the tour: the Northwestern Cluster of churches carved into the earth. Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danagel, Bet Mikael, and Bet Golgotha (women cannot enter Bet Golgotha). The churches are not built on the rock. They are cut from it, descending into courtyards and connected by narrow passageways. In the afternoon, you move to the Southeastern Cluster (Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanuel, and Bet Abba Libanos) each one a separate excavation with its own layout and history.
The day ends at Bet Giyorgis, the most famous of all the churches, built in honor of Saint George, the patron saint of Ethiopia. It stands alone in its own sunken courtyard, isolated from the other clusters. On your second morning, you have the option to rise early and attend a religious ceremony inside one of the churches: a moment when the space fills with worshippers and chanting, and you see the churches as they are still used today. If you arrive in the afternoon instead of the morning, you visit some churches from 2pm to 5pm on day one, then return to complete the rest before your departure flight.
Your guide speaks English throughout, and the private vehicle is air-conditioned. All entrance fees to the churches are included, as are bottled water and airport transfers. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and all areas and surfaces accommodate mobility devices. If you don't have a rental car or prefer not to navigate the site alone, the private guide and transport mean you move through the churches at a steady pace without arranging logistics yourself.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I see a church service or ceremony while I'm in Lalibela?
Yes. On day two, you can attend an early morning religious ceremony inside one of the churches, where you'll see the space in active use with worshippers and traditional chanting. This is optional and timed before your departure flight.
What are the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela actually like?
The churches are carved downward into the bedrock, not built on top of it. You descend into courtyards and walk through narrow stone passages to enter each one. The Northwestern Cluster includes six churches connected by these passages. The Southeastern Cluster has four more, each in its own excavated space. Bet Giyorgis, the most famous, sits alone in a deep rectangular courtyard and is the largest of them all.
What's included in the tour price?
Private transportation from the airport and to your hotel, a live English-speaking guide for the day, all entrance fees to the churches, bottled water, and airport facility fees are included. Meals are not included.
Do I need to arrange my own transport from the airport?
No. Your guide meets you at Lalibela airport and drives you to your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, then begins the tour. If you arrive in the afternoon, you'll visit some churches that day and complete the rest on day two before your flight.
Are there any restrictions on who can enter the churches?
Women are not permitted to enter Bet Golgotha. All other churches are open to all visitors. The minimum age for the tour is 18.
