Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Lalibela's rock-hewn churches
- Visit ancient rock-hewn churches
- See the House of the Saviour of the World church
- View Lalibela Cross inside the church
- Optionally visit large bowl-shaped rocks
The experience
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are carved directly into the earth (some sunk 40 feet below ground level, others built into cliff faces), and a private guide walks you through them at whatever speed suits you. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the sites. The $100 UNESCO heritage fee is already included in the price. You move through the churches on foot, and the guide explains the history and significance of each one as you go. One site, known as the House of the Saviour of the World, holds the Lalibela Cross, a processional cross some say has healing properties. Another features large rocks shaped like bowls that collect water from a ledge.
Because this is a private tour, you're not locked into a set itinerary or a group schedule. If you want to spend three hours at one church and skip another, you can. If you want to leave after four hours instead of eight, that's your call. The guide works with you to make the day match what you actually want to see. Your money goes directly into the Lalibela community (supporting education and equipment for local children), so the tour is built around something beyond the sightseeing itself.
What’s included
- Private transportation from your hotel.
- English-speaking guide for the full day.
- UNESCO heritage fee ($100).
