Lalibela Full Day Tour: 13 Churches carved from stone
Walk through 13 churches hewn from solid rock, then descend into subterranean passages carved centuries ago
A full-day guided tour of Lalibela's 13 monolithic churches, carved entirely below ground level in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with hotel or airport pickup, local guide, bottled water and air-conditioned minivan transport. The churches occupy two complexes said to represent Jerusalem, connected by a network of trenches, passageways and water channels engineered into the rock itself. Minimum age is 13. The experience
Six to seven hours is what it takes to move through both church complexes and the passages that link them. The 13 churches were carved by excavating trenches in rectangles, isolating solid granite blocks, then carving both the exterior and interior of each one. What remains is a UNESCO World Heritage site where the scale of the engineering (the lighting systems, water channels, interconnected subterranean passages) becomes apparent only when you stand inside the rock itself. A local guide walks the route with you, explaining the history and the architectural choices that made the project possible.
Hotel or airport pickup happens at a time you choose, and you travel in an air-conditioned minivan with the driver and guide. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The tour operates in all weather, so bring layers and sturdy shoes. The dress code is formal, which means covered shoulders and knees. Service animals are welcome. The pace suits all fitness levels, though the terrain involves walking and some climbing in and out of the carved spaces.
If you need to arrange a flight to Lalibela or accommodation before or after the tour, both can be added when you book. Lunch, dinner and any alcohol are not included, so plan where you'll eat during the day.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How many churches will I actually see on this tour?
The tour covers all 13 monolithic churches across the two complexes. They are connected by the network of trenches and subterranean passages, so you move between them on foot as part of the same continuous walk.
What does "carved entirely below ground level" actually mean?
Each church was created by excavating a deep trench in a rectangle, leaving a solid block of granite standing in the middle, then carving the building out of that block: both the outside walls and the interior spaces. The result is that you enter the churches by descending into the rock, not by climbing up to them.
Will I have time to eat during the six or seven hours?
The tour duration covers the walking and the sites themselves. Lunch and dinner are not included, so you'll need to arrange a meal break on your own or eat before or after the tour. Your guide can suggest local options.
Do I need to book a flight to Lalibela separately, or is it part of this tour?
Flights are not included in the base tour price, but you can add a local flight when you book if you need one. The tour itself starts with hotel or airport pickup once you arrive in Lalibela.
What should I wear for six hours of walking through churches carved in rock?
Dress code is formal: covered shoulders and knees. Bring sturdy walking shoes because the terrain involves climbing in and out of carved spaces and walking on uneven stone. Layers are useful since the temperature inside the rock churches differs from outside, and the tour operates in all weather.
