Eleven monolithic churches carved straight into the stone, connected by tunnels and hermit holes.
A guided tour of Lalibela's eleven rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Ethiopia where monolithic and semi-monolithic structures carved into the mountainside over 900 years ago form a maze of passageways, internal channels, and intricately carved reliefs. The experience
The churches of Lalibela are organized into three groups across the mountainside. On the first day, you arrive in Lalibela after a 30-minute drive from the airport, have lunch at your hotel, then spend the afternoon exploring the first and third groups of churches. These structures (some connected by internal channels, others featuring hermit holes where monks lived) are carved directly into the stone and decorated with religious symbols carved into the connecting walls. The largest monolithic church in the world stands among them, along with icon paintings that have survived centuries.
The second day focuses on the second group of churches: Bete Gabriel and Rufael, Bete Merkorious, Bete Amanuel, and Bete Aba Libanos. After visiting these four churches, you return to the hotel, check out, and drive back to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. An English-speaking guide leads both days, explaining the history and religious significance of each site as you move through the passageways and chambers.
