The experience
Danakil Depression sits 125 meters below sea level and ranks among Earth's most hostile environments: a place shaped by continental drift where three tectonic plates are pulling the ground apart. The tour starts with a flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, then a 5–6 hour drive south through changing landscape to Hamedela. On the way you stop at Lake Afdera for lunch and a swim, then reach the salt flats and mineral-rich waters of Lake Asale by evening, where you camp under open sky.
Day two is the physical core. After breakfast you drive to Dalol, a landscape of colored salt deposits and acidic hot springs sitting 116 meters below sea level: one of the lowest places on Earth. The drive to Erta Ale takes about four hours across solidified lava and sand. Erta Ale is a shield volcano 613 meters high with a permanent lava lake inside its summit crater, the only one of its kind in the world. You arrive in late afternoon, rest, eat early, and then climb to the rim just before sunset to watch the molten lake glow in the dark.
The final morning you return to the lava lake at dawn, then drive back north to Semera (about five and a half hours total) to catch your flight home. The tour includes a local Afar guide who knows the region, a four-wheel-drive Land Cruiser with driver and fuel, all park fees and scout services required by the government, camping gear, sleeping bags, and bottled water for the journey. You need high physical fitness: the heat is extreme, the terrain is remote, and two nights are spent in open-air camps.

What is Erta Ale and why is it worth the climb?
Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a permanent lava lake inside its summit crater: the only one on Earth. You climb to the rim at sunset and watch the molten rock glow through the night, a sight that does not exist anywhere else.
How hot does it get in the Danakil Depression?
The Danakil is known as the hottest place on the planet. Temperatures regularly exceed 50°C (122°F) during the day, which is why the tour includes bottles of water and why high physical fitness is required.
Where do you sleep on this tour?
You sleep in open-air camps at Hamedela on night one and at the base of Erta Ale on night two. Sleeping bags and camping equipment are provided, but there are no tents or enclosed structures.
What happens at Lake Asale?
Lake Asale is a salt lake surrounded by salt flats and mineral deposits. You can swim in the highly saline water, which keeps you afloat naturally, and camp nearby while watching the sunset over the salt landscape.
Is the domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera included?
The flight is not included in the tour price. You arrange and pay for your own domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. The tour begins when you land and your guide meets you for the drive south.
