The experience

The tour starts at Semera airport and moves through the Danakil Depression on a route built in three parts. Day one takes you from Semera through Afar villages and Lake Afdera (a saltwater lake ringed by natural hot springs) to Erta Ale Base Camp. After settling in, you trek 40 minutes to an hour at a moderate pace to reach the crater and stand above one of the world's rare continuously active lava lakes. Day two is a five-hour drive to Dallol, passing through remote desert and Afar settlements, followed by time at the salty Dallol pool, the salt mountain, and the salt flats at sunset. Day three starts early at Dallol itself, where you explore the sulfur springs, acidic pools, and salt formations (and watch Afar miners extract salt blocks by hand using traditional tools and camel caravans) before the five-hour drive back to Semera by midday.

The schedule moves with you. If Erta Ale's lava lake is your focus, the guide can give you more time there. If Dallol's geothermal landscape pulls you in, the itinerary stretches to match. If you want deeper contact with Afar culture, that shapes the stops and the pace. The guide speaks English throughout and knows the region; the vehicle is air-conditioned; camping nights and all entrance fees to the Danakil Depression are included. You'll sleep in basic camps near the sites themselves, not in towns an hour away.

What’s included

  • All entrance fees to the Danakil Depression.
  • air-conditioned vehicle for the full three days.
  • camping nights at both base camps.
  • a live English-speaking guide throughout.
  • hotel or airport pickup in Semera.

Is this one for you?The itinerary is built to flex with what matters most to you (extra time at the lava lake, a deeper dive into Dallol's geothermal landscape, or cultural time with Afar communities), which is what makes a three-day window enough to go deep instead of just passing through. The moderate trek to Erta Ale and the heat of the region mean you should be comfortable walking and have at least moderate fitness. The early starts and basic camps are what keep you close to the sites and the sunrise.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (2 to 10 years).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Erta Ale's lava lake actually like when you reach it?

Erta Ale is a continuously active volcano with a lava lake that glows inside the crater: one of only a handful on earth that stays molten year-round. You trek to the crater rim at a moderate pace and spend time there watching and photographing the glowing surface, especially striking in the late afternoon and early evening light.

How much walking and trekking is involved over the three days?

The main trek is the 40-minute to one-hour moderate walk up to Erta Ale's crater on day one. The rest of the tour is vehicle-based, though you'll walk around the Dallol salt flats and pools on day two and day three, moving at a pace you set. Moderate fitness is recommended for the volcano trek and the overall heat and altitude of the region.

What are the salt formations and sulfur springs at Dallol?

Dallol is one of the world's most geologically active areas, with vivid sulfur springs, acidic pools in shades of yellow and green, and bizarre salt formations that look otherworldly. You'll also see salt canyons and watch Afar miners working the salt fields with hand tools and camel caravans, extracting salt blocks the way it's been done for centuries.

What kind of accommodation should I expect?

You sleep in basic camps near the sites: one near Erta Ale volcano and one near Dallol. These are simple, functional setups in remote locations. They're not hotels. The camps keep you close to the landscape and the early starts, which is why you can see sunrise over Erta Ale and explore Dallol in the cool of the morning.
