The experience

The tour opens at Semera airport, where your guide meets you for the drive into the Danakil Depression. You stop at Afar villages to see how the local people live, then reach Lake Afdera: a saltwater lake ringed by natural hot springs where you float in the mineral-rich water. By late afternoon you arrive at Erta Ale base camp and trek 40 minutes to an hour up to the crater rim. The volcano is one of the world's few places with a continuously active lava lake, and you spend time there at dusk watching the glow intensify as daylight fades.

Day two takes you across five hours of remote desert to Dallol, passing through Afar settlements and barren landscapes. At Dallol you explore the sulfur springs, acidic pools and salt formations: geology so extreme it looks unreal. You also visit the salt mining areas where Afar workers still cut and load salt blocks onto camels using hand tools, a practice that has not changed in centuries. The salt flats catch the sunset and turn the landscape into something that feels like another planet. On day three you return to Dallol at dawn, then drive three hours to Mekele, the capital of Tigray region, where you stay in a hotel instead of a camp.

The final two days focus on the rock-hewn churches. Abuna Yemata Guh sits at 2,580 meters on a cliffside and requires a challenging climb, an assistant person accompanies you, but the interior walls and ceilings hold frescoes that date back centuries. On the last day you hike to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, two churches on the same height that involve a steep ascent taking three to four hours round trip. Both date to the 6th century and both sit high enough to command views across the entire Gheralta landscape. After lunch you drive back to Mekele and are dropped at your hotel, the airport or another destination of your choice.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3).

What is Erta Ale volcano like when you reach the crater?

Erta Ale is one of the world's few volcanoes with a permanent lava lake. You trek 40 minutes to an hour from base camp to the crater rim and spend time there watching the lava glow, especially as daylight fades. The lake is continuously active, so the sight changes throughout your visit.

How difficult is the climb to Abuna Yemata Guh church?

Abuna Yemata Guh requires a challenging hike and some climbing to reach the cliffside at 2,580 meters. An assistant person accompanies you during the ascent. The church itself, built in the 5th or 6th century, sits inside the cliff with well-preserved frescoes covering the walls and ceilings.

What do you do at Dallol on day two?

At Dallol you walk across sulfur springs, acidic pools and bizarre salt formations: some of the most geologically active terrain on earth. You also visit salt mining areas where Afar locals still extract salt blocks by hand and load them onto camels, a traditional method that continues unchanged.

Are the rock-hewn churches of Mariam and Daniel Korkor visited on the same day?

Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor sit on the same height and are visited together on day five. The hike to both takes three to four hours round trip depending on your pace. Both churches date to the 6th century and both offer panoramic views of the Gheralta landscape from their clifftop locations.

What meals and accommodation are covered during the five days?

All meals, accommodation and camping nights are included in the tour price. You camp near Erta Ale on night one, camp near Dallol on night two, and stay in hotels in Mekele and Hawzen on nights three, four and five. Entrance fees to all sites and guide fees are also included.
