3-Day Danakil Depression Tour: Erta Ale Volcano & Dallol
Watch lava boil at night from the volcano's edge, then trek salt flats where camel caravans still work
A 3-day guided tour of the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia's Afar region, traveling by air-conditioned vehicle and camel to remote volcanic and salt landscapes. The itinerary centers on Erta Ale, an active volcano where you camp overnight at the rim to watch the lava lake; Dallol, a sulfur-and-potash plateau shaped by volcanic activity; and Lake Assale, where local miners cut salt into blocks and load them onto camels. A live guide in English or German leads groups of under twenty people. The operator provides camping gear, water, and all transport within the region.

The experience
The tour starts at Semera airport and immediately heads into the Danakil Depression, a low-lying desert basin in the Afar region. The first day ends at Dodom, a settlement 9.5 kilometers from Erta Ale's base, where camels carry your sleeping materials and food up to the volcano's rim. You trek the final stretch on foot, about an hour, and spend the night in open-air camping, watching the lava lake boil and glow in darkness.
Day two moves through the salt-mining landscape. You drive to Ragad, where you watch locals break salt from the ground, cut it into rectangular blocks, and load it onto camels. The Afar Depression holds 1,200 square kilometers of salt flats. Then you visit Dallol, a plateau of volcanic formations in yellows, greens, and rust tones created by sulfur deposits and mineral springs. You also see Lake Assale, a shallow salt lake where you can watch the sunset and the camel caravans that move through the region. That night you camp at a basic site under the stars.
The final morning gives you another chance to see sunrise at Lake Assale before the drive back to Semera airport. The guide speaks English or German and stays with the group throughout. The operator provides an air-conditioned vehicle for all driving, bottles of water for the trip, camping equipment (light mattresses and mats), and all fees and taxes. Camels handle the gear transport on the volcano approach. Groups stay small, under twenty people, so the pace is manageable and the guide can answer questions.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and German.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Erta Ale and why do you camp there?
Erta Ale is an active volcano in the Danakil Depression with a lava lake inside its crater. You camp at the rim overnight so you can watch the lava boil and glow in the dark: the most dramatic moment of the tour. Camels carry your sleeping gear and food up the slope. You trek the final hour on foot.
Can I actually see local salt miners at work?
Yes. On day two you visit Ragad, where you watch locals break salt blocks from the ground and load them onto camels. The salt mining is still an active trade in the region, and you see the process firsthand rather than a demonstration.
What kind of camping is this? Do I need my own tent?
The operator provides all camping equipment: light mattresses, mats, and cooking gear. You sleep in open-air camps (no tents), which means you're exposed to the sky and the desert air. Camels transport the materials to the volcano rim on day one. On day two you camp at a basic site under stars.
How do I get from Semera airport to the Danakil Depression?
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up at Semera airport and drives you into the depression. The vehicle stays with the group for all driving. Camels take over only for carrying gear up to the volcano rim.
