The experience

Asmara opens the tour as a UNESCO heritage site built on Italian modernist design from the 1920s and 1930s. The Fiat Tagliero building, the Cinema Asmara (the old Opera house), the National Museum, the Roman Cathedral, the Grand Mosque and the Orthodox Cathedral anchor the walking route through the city's geometric facades and street markets: vegetable, spice and souvenir squares, plus the Medeber recycling depot. You stay at the Star Hotel and move out early the next morning.

Keren sits in the mountains where temperate climate and fertile soil once drew European visitors, and where British and Italian forces fought decisive WWII battles. The Monday market fills with camels, jewelry and souvenirs; the Mariam Dearit shrine sits inside a Baobab tree; British and Italian cemeteries mark the war years; the 1930s railway station, the 19th-century Tigu Egyptian Fort, St. Antony Romanesque Church and the old Mosque complete the stops. You overnight at the Sarina Hotel, then drive south via a zigzag mountain highway with stops along the way.

Massawa, called the Pearl of the Red Sea and the city of Islands, holds Turkish, Egyptian and European architecture, shopping arcades and the Shafi Mosque: one of Africa's oldest, believed built by the first Hejira arrivals over a thousand years ago. The final day returns you uphill to Asmara through mountain scenery and lush vegetation, with stops to meet local people and time to shop before your airport transfer. A private guide in English travels with you throughout. The operator arranges your travel permit, covers fuel surcharge and handles all entrance fees.
