The experience

You land at Asmara International Airport and your guide meets you for the transfer to your hotel. Day one stays in the capital: the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary stands as a Lombard-Romanesque landmark from the Italian colonial era, and the Fiat Tagliero Building, built in 1938, is a futuristic concrete structure that has become Eritrea's most photographed modernist site. You walk Liberation Avenue (Harnet Ave) in the afternoon, visit the Enda Mariam Orthodox Church dedicated to St. Mary, and end at the Asmara Theater and Opera House, constructed in 1920.

Day two is a 91-kilometer drive to Keren. The camel market runs on Monday mornings and shows the age-old bartering tradition for camels, sheep and cows. Afterward you visit the Keren War Cemetery, a memorial to Commonwealth soldiers, and the Mariam Dearit Shrine: a small Catholic shrine built inside a 500-year-old baobab tree. Day three begins with a four-hour immersion in the Blieni tribe's religious festival at Halib Mentel, where you witness traditional dances, music and ceremonies. The festival occurs on specific dates only. A 120-kilometer coastal drive then takes you to Massawa, where you have free time to explore the beach, eat seafood or walk the streets at your own pace.

The final day is a guided walk through Massawa's Old Town, which shows Ottoman-era architecture and coral-built houses. You see the ruins of the Former Imperial Palace and St. Mariam Cathedral, then drive back to Asmara for a last stop at the Covered Bazaar and the Tank Graveyard: a site that marks Eritrea's recent conflict history. Your guide takes you to the airport for departure.
