The experience
Nine days takes you through Eritrea's three main cities in sequence. You start in Asmara with the Fiat Tagliero Building and Liberation Avenue's Italian colonial facades, then move through the National Museum and the Shuq district's markets. The second leg carries you inland to Keren, where you spend a full morning in the market watching vendors sell spices, produce and local crafts, and an afternoon at the Camera Market hunting vintage equipment. From there the route descends to Massawa on the Red Sea, where you visit the Massawa National Museum and take a day trip to the Dahlak Archipelago: an overnight stay on the islands surrounded by the water.
The return to Asmara crosses the highlands again by road, then you fly to Djibouti via Addis Ababa. The final two days there move from Djibouti City (where you see the Presidential Palace and Hamoudi Mosque) to Lake Assal, Africa's lowest point, a full-day excursion into a landscape that looks like nowhere else. An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout. An air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport between cities and sites. Hotel checkout and departure happen on the morning of day nine.
The itinerary builds around what each place is known for: Asmara's architecture and art, Keren's working markets, Massawa's history as a trade port, and Djibouti's geological extremes. Meals are your own except where the itinerary names them, and evenings leave room for optional exploration: local restaurants, cafes on Harnet Avenue, or last-minute shopping in the bazaars.
