The experience
What makes Wisley different from other gardens is the sheer scale of what's on the grounds. The RHS Hilltop, a brand-new planet-friendly research centre, sits at the top of the garden and is dedicated to the next generation of gardeners. It's where you'll learn about the RHS's ground-breaking work in helping future-proof the planet. Below that, the World Food Garden shows fruit and vegetables of all shapes and sizes, while the Wellbeing Garden offers quiet spaces to sit and reflect. The Wildlife Garden lets you spot insects by the water, and the Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden fills the air with scent.
The gardens change dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings swathes of bulbs and blossom; summer fills the mixed borders and roses; autumn paints the grounds in colour; winter offers frost-sparkled walks. The tropical Glasshouse stays warm year-round. You can challenge yourself to race up Battleston Hill or simply wander and breathe in the heady scents. The garden attracts around a million visitors each year, and the RHS teams of staff, students, apprentices and volunteers keep the displays and grounds maintained throughout.
Entry is self-guided. You move through the gardens at your own pace and spend as long as you want at each stop. Public transportation options are available nearby, and the site is fully wheelchair accessible with pram and stroller access. Service animals are welcome.
