The experience
You start at City of Cambridge Rowing Club with a safety briefing and a 30-minute session on rowing machines. A coach walks you through the timing and technique of the stroke (how to catch the water, drive through your legs, and finish cleanly), so you understand the motion before you're in a boat. Once the fundamentals click, you move to the water with your group of four and your instructor, first practicing the stroke from the side of the river in the stable quad boat until everyone feels ready.
Then you row for a full hour on the River Cam. You'll glide past the historic boathouses and under the bridges that define Cambridge's rowing culture, following your coach's calls and working as a team to keep the boat moving smoothly. The quad boat is stable and forgiving (built so all four rowers have two blades each), and your instructor stays with you the whole time, adjusting your technique and keeping the pace steady. At the end, you help put the boat away, which is part of the ritual of the club.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Do I need to have rowed before, or is this for complete beginners?
Complete beginners are welcome. The coach teaches you the rowing stroke from scratch on the machines, then guides you through your first time in the boat. The session is designed so you learn the essentials before you hit the water.
How long do I actually spend rowing on the river?
You row on the River Cam for a full hour once your group is confident with the technique. The first 30 minutes of the two-hour session is spent on the rowing machines at the club, learning the stroke.
What is a quad boat, and why does it matter for a beginner group?
A quad boat is a four-person rowing shell where each rower has two oars (blades). It's stable and forgiving compared to narrower boats, which makes it ideal for a group learning together for the first time.
Where is City of Cambridge Rowing Club, and how do I get there?
City of Cambridge Rowing Club is in Cambridge, and public transportation options are available nearby. You can reach the club by bus or on foot depending on where you're staying in the city.
What happens if someone in our group isn't confident after the machine session?
Your instructor assesses how everyone is doing and practices the stroke with you from the side of the river in the boat before you push off. The coach only takes you out on the full river once all four of you are ready to follow instructions carefully.
