itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Derbyshire and Peak District

  • Visit Eyam village plague site
  • Travel to Bakewell village
  • See Bakewell Pudding origin
  • Stop at Monsal Head viaduct
  • Explore Castleton town
  • Optional visit to Peak’s Cavern

“You see that cottage?” our driver-guide, Tom, nodded as we rolled into Eyam. “That’s where they quarantined themselves—saved the whole county.” I’d read about the plague village before, but standing there, listening to Tom’s quiet respect for these people, it felt heavier than I expected. The morning was cool and a bit damp; you could smell woodsmoke somewhere. We wandered past stone cottages with tiny windows and I caught myself whispering without meaning to.

Bakewell was next—just twenty minutes or so down winding roads lined with sheep (one blocked us for a minute, which Tom handled like he knew them all by name). The town looks exactly like those old English postcards: riverside walks, flower baskets everywhere. But honestly? The Bakewell pudding is what stuck with me. Warm, eggy-sweet, a little sticky—nothing like the supermarket version back home. Li laughed when I tried to say “Bakewell” in her accent; probably butchered it.

Monsal Head surprised me. You stand there and this old railway viaduct just appears out of the hills—grey arches against all that green. It’s not loud or dramatic, but somehow it makes you pause. We leaned on the stone wall for ages watching clouds drift over the valley. Later in Castleton, there were kids feeding ducks by the stream and an old man outside the pub who tipped his cap at us (I still think about that moment). Our guide pointed out Peak’s Cavern—apparently it’s called “the Devil’s Arse,” which made everyone laugh—and some of us went inside while others just sat with ice cream in the sun.

I didn’t expect to feel so much in one day trip from Manchester: quiet awe in Eyam, a sugar rush in Bakewell, wind on my face up at Monsal Head. It wasn’t perfect—the weather kept changing its mind—but maybe that’s why it felt real.
