"You ever seen sheep that look like clouds?" That’s what our guide, Mark, asked as we drove out of Manchester. I laughed, but then—out the minivan window—there they were, scattered across hills that looked almost painted. We reached the Lake District before I’d finished my coffee (which I spilled a bit on my jeans—classic me).

Tarn Hows came last—the kind of place you don’t expect to find unless someone local brings you. It was quiet except for sheep bells and wind in the grass. If you come April through October there’s this old steam train too; ours chugged along so slowly I could’ve walked beside it, but honestly? That made it better somehow. Still think about that view from the window—soft hills rolling off forever.
