The experience
Oxford's 38 colleges are private institutions, and which ones open to visitors shifts day to day. Your guide knows the current access and routes the walk to get you inside at least one college without the guesswork. You'll pass by many more (Trinity, Balliol, All Souls, Wadham), and hear the stories of the students and scholars who lived there, from Henry VIII's break with Rome to the writers who shaped modern literature. Entry fees to the colleges you visit are covered by the guide. A few colleges charge a small fee on top if you choose to enter them.
The walk always includes the Bridge of Sighs and the Sheldonian Theatre, two of Oxford's most photographed corners. The Bodleian Library is introduced from outside, guides aren't permitted inside, but if the Divinity School is open, you may visit that instead. You'll also pass the pub where Bill Clinton famously never inhaled, and the guide will weave in the Harry Potter film locations that appear on the route when they're accessible. Request any special interest in advance (sciences, arts, writers, a particular college), and the guide will shape the afternoon around it.
The tour runs between 90 and 120 minutes, a pace that lets you absorb the college courtyards and the guide's storytelling without rushing. If you need the tour in a language other than English, book at least two days ahead. A bilingual guide may be available, and there's a small additional cost. Families with children, wheelchair users and anyone of any fitness level can join. Strollers and accessible transport are available.
