The experience
Your guide meets you outside 11 Broad Street at the red pillar mailbox, wearing a royal blue item with a heraldic shield. From there, the walk covers Balliol College, Trinity College, and the Sheldonian Theatre, where your guide explains the 13 busts atop the pillars and corrects a common misconception about them. You'll hear about Oxford's stranger traditions, from student pranks to the tortoises kept on campus, and learn how the university's graduation ceremony actually works. The route takes you past the Bodleian Library, which holds 12 million books, and the Radcliffe Camera, a dome famous as one of Oxford's dreaming spires.
The walk is entirely outdoors, moving through streets, squares, and college exteriors. Your guide, a current student or graduate, weaves in stories about the Oxbridge application process, the tensions between town and gown, and the history behind Oxford's most prestigious colleges. If you booked the New College option, you'll have access to that college after the main tour ends. A self-guided visit that takes you through one of the university's oldest foundations, where the lanes and meadows connect to the literary imaginations of Carroll, Lewis, and Rowling.
New College is generally 10 to 15 minutes' walk from where the main tour finishes. If you've selected it, note that access runs from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm daily (March to October), with last entry at 4:30 pm. The tour itself suits all fitness levels, though the 90-minute walk is the core commitment. Wheelchair users are welcome, though one small section is inaccessible and some parts of New College have uneven surfaces and potential trip hazards.
