The Experience

Your guide is already moving through Green Park when you arrive, heading toward Buckingham Palace where the Changing of the Guard ceremony unfolds on select mornings. The walk covers three hours and takes in twenty of Westminster's main sights — Downing Street, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliament Square, the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade, and Trafalgar Square. You'll stop long enough at each to get the story and the photo, but not so long that the day stalls.

After the walking section wraps, your guide directs you to the pier. The Thames cruise from Westminster to Tower Pier is the part that breaks up the day — you sit, the city moves past, and the river does the work of getting you there. Tower Bridge appears as you approach, and when you disembark at Tower Pier, the Tower of London is right in front of you. Entry is included, so you walk straight in to see the Beefeater guards, the ravens, and a thousand years of history compressed into stone and towers.

The Changing of the Guard happens daily in June and July, otherwise on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10am — the British Army sets the schedule, so times can shift without notice. The tour runs in small groups with a local guide who knows which corners to stand in and what the buildings actually mean, not just what they look like.
